Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)
Wikipedia describes VDI perfectly: “Desktop virtualization or virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) is a server-centric computing model that borrows from the traditional thin-client model but is designed to give system administrators and end-users the best of both worlds: the ability to host and centrally manage desktop virtual machines in the data center while giving end users a full PC desktop experience.. The user experience is intended to be identical to that of a standard PC, but from a thin client device or similar, from the same office or remotely
The “intended” part is the critical bit. Historically and even today, some of the more popular solutions from the industry heavyweights fall way short in delivering a flexible operating model cost effectively (not just in achieving the target state, but also the transition costs are often prohibitive). What to look for in a scalable and robust solution:
- Support thin, thick and virtual desktops in the same way (both tools and processes)
-
Minimise and ideally eliminate the reliance on desktop standards
-
Support Virtual Desktop, Virtual/thin applications, streaming apps and streaming desktop seamlessly. One technology not a suite of components
-
True infrastructure scalability (the business case for backend infrastructure actually stacks up)
-
Support application packaging and delivery in a consistent way both to thin, virtual and thick desktop clients
-
Support all worker types such as Knowledge Workers (including mobile computing and working disconnected – even virtually)
-
Support contractors, consultants working in organisations enabling them to securely use their own laptops to save their customers being obligated to provide devices for them to enforce security standards.
-
Multi Operating System device support (Windows, Mac, Linux)
-
Support Windows look and feel within any browser window – a usable and high performance Webtop
-
Able to really deliver desktop and applications as a service
We have tested and evaluated a number of solutions and are able to share our findings with you. Bookmark this page and we will be posting additional information shortly. In the meantime, if you would like to know more, please phone 03 9670 9600 or email vdi@tmg100.com
