ITAM User Group covers Virtualisation on the Flexera FNMS Platform

TMG hosted a FlexNet User Group session on virtualisation technologies presented by Peter Rowe (Flexera)

The session examined the issues around collecting inventory data on virtualised application installations, monitoring access to those applications and measuring their usage, for example in environments utilising technologies such as Citrix, Edgesight, XenApp and App-V.

The session included managing the complexities with the virtualization products such as

  • the commercial bundles (sets of products with different numbers of entitlements and different license models);
  • how to collect data on license keys for specific virtualising technologies, for example, VMware including license capacity, assigned capacity and the tracking of license keys across servers to avoid over-deployment of these virtualising technologies.
  • understanding virtual machine affinity, clustering and partitioning within technologies such as Oracle VM and how failing to do so can lead to significant unbudgeted software licencing cost.
